CHAPTER FOURTEEN

I wake up, roll over, and check the floor. He’s gone.

After explaining where the scream came from to Zeke and Jax, Crash came back in my room last night and positioned himself on the floor beside the bed. But when I tried to strike up a conversation, he told me to go to sleep in that definitive tone. Too exhausted from the quick but exhilarating orgasm, I didn’t fight him and did as I was told.

“Hi.” I wander into the kitchen.

Towel tossed over his shoulder like a kitchen pro, Jax glances at me. “Mornin’. Pancakes?”

“No thanks.” I open the cupboard to grab a mug and a pod. “Just coffee for me this morning.” I smile. Nervous about today’s upcoming events, it’s probably best that I tackle it on an empty stomach.

“Oh, come on, you gotta try Buttercup’s pancakes.” Zeke squeezes Jax’s cheek, and the huge man swats Zeke’s hand away like he’s an annoying fly threatening his food.

Laughing, I drop the pod into the coffeemaker and hit the start button. “Where’s Crash?”

Eyes on the bubbles popping in the pancakes, Jax replies, “He had to run out.”

“Where?”

“Hmm …” Jax uses a spatula to lift and inspect the cakes. “I’m not sure but …” He stops to flip the pancakes. “He wanted us to meet him at his shop around three thirty.”

“All of us?”

“Yep.”

“Me included?”

“That’s what he said.” He scoops up a pancake and shimmies it onto a plate. “Sure you’re not hungry?”

“Yeah, just have a lot on my mind.”

“Well, you should eat something.” He holds the plate out as though I don’t have a choice, and on cue, my stomach decides to produce an argumentative roil.

“Okay, thanks.” I smile, accept the pancakes, and head for the table. Finishing it, I compliment the chef. “Wow, that was really good!”

“Yeah, the old geezer is good for something other than tending bar and fighting in the ring. Oh and don’t get me started on his girl—” Zeke laughs.

“Hey, ya better be careful, little bro.” Jax squints at him with that lopsided grin dangling from his lips.

“Ya know I love Emmie. She’s the mother of my nephew.” Zeke winks at me.

“Or niece.” Jax sets a plate down in front of him. “Now, shut up and eat.”

They go at it for the next hour, but I welcome the distraction. After I take a shower and get ready for the countdown to the rumble, I curl up on the couch with a book Brianna gave me before I left Idaho. Like Josh, I miss her so much. No questions asked, she opened her arms, home, and family to me three years ago when I showed up on her doorstep, and she remained there for me through everything I tossed at her. Then all that shit started with Darrell and I had to leave. She’s partly why I left. Darrell started to make subtle threats, so I had to leave before anything happened.

Zeke walks into the room, his snug dark tee and jeans emphasizing his fit form. “You ready?”

“Yes.
